Technologist of the Year
Congratulations Julie Johnson

Congratulations to Julie Johnson, a second grade teacher at Greenbrook School in South Brunswick Public Schools. Julie is the 2008 NJAET Technologist of the Year Award winner.

Across the South Brunswick School District, there are students, who for medical reasons, are receiving home instruction. Recently, one of Mrs. Johnson's students became one of these students and his return was uncertain. Mrs. Johnson and her second grade team, the district's technician, and the child's parents began to look for ways they could use technology to create a successful distance learning environment for this child.

Documentation on the success of this process led to the selection of Julie Johnson as this year's award winner. Plans call for Julie to give an overview of this project at the May 13, 2008 Board meeting, to present a workshop at the Annual Fall Conference on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at Georgian Court University, and to be featured in an upcoming issue of the NJAET Journal.

NJAET Elections/May Meeting
Don't forget to register if you will attend

This year, there are two positions up for election to the NJAET Executive Board. The NJAET Nominating Comittee announces Cathy Grimaldi as the candidate for the position of President-elect and Carla Hockenbury for the position of Secretary. Elections will be held at the May 13, 2008 Board meeting, which will begin at 6:00 pm at the State Department of Education in Trenton.

Members are invited to attend this special board meeting to participate in the election process, to interact with the 2008 Technologist of the Year Award winner (see previous item), and to learn more about the workings of the Board and what is being planned for the future or possibly becoming a member of the Executive Board at some point.

Anyone interested in attending the May 13th meeting is asked to RSVP to Carol Olson at cjolson50@comcast.net so we have an accurate count for the food at the meeting.

Professional Development Program

Powerful Learning Practice for Administrators and Teachers
A Statewide Pilot for 21st Century Learning at Kean University

The Center for Innovative Education at Kean University is offering an exciting opportunity for schools to become part of a pilot cohort for the Powerful Learning Practices (PLP) program created by Will Richardson and Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach. Powerful Learning Practices offers a unique opportunity for educators in New Jersey to participate in long-term, job-embedded professional development program that immerses them in 21st Century learning environments. The PLP model is currently enabling hundreds of educators around the country to experience the transformative potential of social Web tools to build global learning communities and re-envision their own personal learning practice.

Kean University will be serving as the hub for a comprehensive cohort in NJ consisting of 20 teams that will hit every rung in the educational ladder from K-12 to the NJ DOE. We are looking for teams that acknowledge and value the new learning opportunities that these technologies afford, and are willing to be part of a ground breaking experience in education in NJ.

Below you will find the updated Powerful Learning Practices brochure that co-brands Kean as an active partner in the program, as well as a detailed description of the program, outcomes for participating Administrators and Teacher Leaders, a description of the process, costs, and important information on how to reserve your spot in this pilot program. Also included is a URL for a letter of intent for your district.
